What is the default gateway?
The IP address default gateway is the local IP address which is allotted to the modem or configured router. To communicate with it this IP address is used by various devices in the network. You should enter the CMD (type CMD, Start + R, & then ENTER). To find your IP address default gateway, then write the command ipconfig & next ENTER. It will yield a lot of info about the configuration of your inter network. Line with ‘default gateway’ & have an IP address default gateway in it.
After you identify your IP address default gateway, you may use it to access router configuration or modem. To do it you must write-in the address bar IP default gateway of the browser (wherever the name of the pages is written). For instance if your default gateway is 192.168.1.254, you must use this address to type &access http://192.168.1.254 or just 192.168.1.254. Next that you will be asked for a password & username for your router. For default password for your router you may check internet or router manual. Normally router passwords are not altered on setup & default one will run.
If you cannot observe those credentials it is prudent to contact your Internet service provider (ISP) to request for that info. They will even guide you to enter your modem & run the configuration you wish to do.
Is it likely to modify the default gateway?
By entering the configuration of your router or modem you may alter the default gateway. For instance, if as a default gateway IP address your home network is using 192.168.0.1 you may alter it to another IP address through router configuration line. However while doing so ensure that you conscious of what type of alterations you can alter by this. If you modify 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.1.254 for instance then all your devices will be allotted with various IP addresses. That might simply work wonderful if your network uses dynamic IP address allocation. However in case few of the devices use fixed IP addresses then these devices might not be capable of connecting to a router through fresh IP address until you alter it to the one beginning with 192.168.1.
